State Police Association endorses Cahillane for DA

"State Police Association of Massachusetts recognizes that Mike Cahillane’s extensive experience as a prosecutor is an essential qualification in this race. Mike has prosecuted major cases for 10 years. He has worked closely with our State Police Detective Unit and the SPAM members assigned to it. I have been contacted by many SPAM members residing in Hampshire and Franklin Counties, and they have resoundingly supported Mike Cahillane for the office of District Attorney.
Due to his past record of supporting victim’s rights, his impressive level of experience and his outstanding reputation with Troopers and Sergeants in the area, the Executive Board believes the residents of Hampshire and Franklin Counties will be best served by his election.
Based on these reasons, I am very pleased to announce the State Police Association’s endorsement of Michael Cahillane for Northwestern District Attorney.”

Former three-term Northampton Mayor and retired Probate and Family Court Chief Justice Sean M. Dunphy has endorsed Michael A. Cahillane for election as Northwestern District Attorney.
“The present district attorney is retiring, it is an opportunity for change, and Michael Cahillane is the person who will bring new and innovative leadership to that office,” said Dunphy.
Cahillane, who is assistant district attorney, is vying for the position with Hampshire Register of Probate David Sullivan in the Sept. 14 Democratic primary, which will decide the race because of a lack of Republican or independent candidates.
Cahillane has also won the endorsement of the Amherst Police League as “an ardent advocate of victim’s rights, with a priority of protecting our children, elderly and disabled.”
He also received the endorsement of Northampton City Councilor Angela Plassmann, who praised his handling of the investigation of last December’s fires in downtown Northampton.

I personally do not know either candidate running for District Attorney for the Franklin/Hampshire Counties. As a voter, I look at the experience and qualifications not the political party or political clout a candidate has. I read that Mr. Cahillane is a practicing assistant district attorney for the past 10 years. He has prosecuted more than 200 major felony cases and understands the responsibility he has to put the “bad” guys and girls in jail. Mr. Sullivan on the other hand has been a Register of Probate for the past 9 years and has a long list of civic engagements and a commitment to social justice and public service. To me, that sounds like a walking, talking professional politician, not a person who has the qualifications to go into a court and prosecute a murderer, a rapist or a sick pedophile. To me, Mr. Sullivan’s resume shows no experience in “prosecuting” or doing the job of a district attorney, it does show me he is a full-time politician. We need an experienced prosecutor and I will be voting for Michael Cahillane, a proven crime fighter in the CRIMINAL Courts of Franklin/Hampshire Counties. This is not the time or position to support a candidate because he has ties to a political machine or because a “politician” endorses … it is a time to pick a candidate who actually can do the job.

Northampton Police Officer’s Union Endorses Cahillane for District Attorney

The Northampton Police Officers Union has thrown its support behind Michael A. Cahillane in the Democratic primary election for Northwestern district attorney. Leaders of the law enforcement organization cited Cahillane’s strong crime fighting record as an assistant district attorney and his excellent working relationship with police as the primary reasons for their backing.
“What really is the difference in this race is the fact that Mr. Cahillane is a career prosecutor with a long track record of working cooperatively with law enforcement to keep our communities safe,” said Vic Caputo, president of the Northampton Police Officer’s Union, International Brotherhood of Police Officers, Local 390. “He has worked closely with us on countless cases and has always gone above and beyond. We can’t think of a better person for the job”.
Donald Nichols, Union Treasurer added, “Mike has a broad background of community outreach to residents in both counties helping to mentor youth and protect our seniors by conducting workshops and seminars on combating elder abuse, gang activity and preventing cyber crime. You’ve heard of community policing – Cahillane has been doing community DA-ing.”
Cahillane, who has served as a Citizen’s Police Academy instructor, said he is grateful for the support of Northampton police officers rank and file. “I pledge to continue the lines of communication between the line officers and the DA’s office. The bottom line is we have to prosecute the criminals the officers arrest,” Cahillane said.
